Secara geografis Provinsi Maluku Utara terletak di antara 3° Lintang Utara – 3° Lintang Selatan dan124° – 129° Bujur Timur dengan batas-batas wilayah : Samudera Pasifik di sebelah Utara, Laut Seram di sebelah Selatan, Laut Halmahera di sebelah Timur, Laut Maluku di sebelah Barat. Provinsi Maluku Utara mempunyai luas wilayah 145.818,1 km², terdiri dari 45.087,66 km² (30,92 %) wilayah daratan dan 100.731,44 km² (69,08 %) wilayah perairan.
